Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest child of the singer Dionne Warswick, and gospel music star Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew up in a family that was musical. At the age of a small girl, Houston started performing professionally in her church's choir. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosn's single from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mom. She then went on to perform backing vocals for Jermaine, Lou Rawls, and her mother. Her vocals with the New York-based band Material attracted major record labels, including Arista. The label signed her to Arista in 1983 and spent the remainder of her professional career. The first Whitney Houston album was released in the year 1985. It would become one of the best-selling albums by an artist. A number of hit singles, such as the hit songs Saving All My Love For You How Will I Know It's Good to Love You and The greatest Love of All were released from the album setting her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US number ones. The album sold 3 million copies its first year, and over 25 million worldwide. She won her first six Grammys. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney that included hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the top-selling performers of all time. While the film wasn't very well received, nor did her performance, but the soundtrack of the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the top spot on both the albums and singles charts in America for months. It sold 44,000,000 copies. Her daughter Bobbi is born the month of March of 1993, the year following her wedding to Bobby Brown. In 1996, her consumption of the drug was well-documented.
